The "Italo-German Campaign Medal in Africa" medal was designed by De Marchis and was instituted by the Italian Government to reward the achievements of the "Afrikakorps". The medal was awarded only to German troops, with the first awards made in early 1942 and the last awards being given in early 1944. These were stopped after Italy surrendered and the award was withdrawn on the March 29, 1944, along with other Italian awards.
