The German World War II Soldbuch The Soldbuch (Soldbücher is the correct German plural) was used both as a pay book and a personnel identity document. The book was the authority itself, with the holder of the Soldbuch having the authority to draw pay, although little or no pay was ever recorded in most cases. In addition to providing this authority, a soldier's Soldbuch was a very detailed identification document, issued equipment inventory and service record. During the general mobilization in Germany in mid-1939, and subsequently when a new soldier entered military service, he was provided with an Erkennungsmarke (dogtag or I.D. disc) and a Soldbuch. Occasionally the Soldbuch number and the Erkennungsmarke number coincided, but it was not intentional or necessary. These books took many different forms for the various branches of the military and para-military organizations, thus the Army Soldbuch was different from the Luftwaffe version, which in turn was different from the SS version, and so on.
